Dreams About Lions or Tigers Meaning

Dreaming about lions and tigers can be interpreted in several ways, depending on what you personally associate with them, and universal symbolism.

Sometimes you may have dreams which you suspect have a hidden message. Dreams about lions or tigers can be particularly perplexing if you don't understand what they mean. Your subconscious could be attempting to tell you something that's trapped in the deep recesses of your mind.

According to the psychoanalyst Freud, things which are painful for us to access consciously can become trapped in our unconscious life. A follower of Freud's, Jung, believed that thoughts from our subconscious, and the collective unconscious, can rise into our dreams, and that these dreams can be interpreted if we examine dream imagery and symbols.

According to Jung, the collective unconscious is a universal pool of knowledge we can tap into while dreaming. Animals such as lions or tigers in a dream, would represent common factors we all know about them, and relate to something happening in our personal life.

If you dream about lions or tigers, the first place to begin if you want to practice the art of dream interpretation, is to list facts you know already about the animals, along with any sayings, thoughts, feelings and traits you believe them to have. For example lions are known for:

  • Being proud
  • strong
  • Brave

There are stories pertaining to lions you may have heard of also which could influence your dreams meaning, such as Born Free, and the tale of the lion who had a thorn removed from his paw by St Jerome.

If the two examples pertain to your brain store of information regarding lions, you could add to your list:

  • Wildness
  • Gratitude

If you dreamed about tigers you would build a list about what you associate with tigers, in the same way you compiled the lion list. For example, you may think of tigers as being:

  • Frightening
  • Beautiful
  • Rare

Tigers are associated in films, books and sayings with being both fearsome, and friendly. The way you interpret your dream with them in, will depend upon the circumstances in which the tiger presented itself, and the type of character form the tiger projected. A cartoon tiger, such as Tigger from Winnie the Pooh in a dream may have something to do with childhood, or your inner child. However, a tiger which comes across as vicious and wild, bearing teeth and flashing his claws, is more likely to have something to do with primitive feelings, such as aggression or shock.

The next step to interpreting the meaning of dreams about lions or tigers is to think closely about what happened to you the day before your dream. Perhaps you had a shocking or frightening encounter with someone? In which case the wild animal could represent the person who upset you, and your deepest feelings about the experience.

If you were angry or aggressive the day before your dream, the lion or tiger may represent you. In which case your subconscious may be showing you how aggressive you were, or how angry you felt about something, or towards someone.

Jung also believed that each individual has a shadow side, which goes along with the theory that where there is good there is bad, and where there's dark there's also light. In order to fit in with society and behave properly, we may repress our shadow side. This happens when a person is excessively nice all the time, but secretly feels angry now and then while hiding their true feelings from the outside world.

Feelings which are suppressed, as in willfully withheld, can become repressed, as in pushed into our subconscious out of sight, even from ourselves. Wild, or scary creatures in dreams, such as lions, tigers, sharks, wolves and snakes, sometimes represent our shadow side, which is desperate to resurface because we haven't paid it any attention.

If you have nightmares about lions or tigers, according to the teaching of Freud and Jung, you probably need to become better balanced for your own good. If you hide your true feelings a lot, and never let off steam they can surface as nightmares or result in angry outbursts. Dealing with them as they occur can prevent them building up.

Remember that dreams of lions or tigers can be positive, particularly if you associate them with positive traits on your list. If, for example, you dream that a lion sits beside you looking strong and beautiful, perhaps you've just done something in your waking life to be proud of, and shown great strength of character and courage.

Likewise, dreaming of a tiger playing, and rolling with you as you laugh and enjoy each others company, could show you've successfully integrated your shadow side into your personality, and that the tiger side of you is now capable of standing up for you, and making you brave. This leaves you free to relax and be playful, safe in the knowledge that you are capable of taking care of yourself.

Lions and tigers are special creatures. Tigers particularly, are becoming rare due to mankind's bad behavior and lack of respect. You are fortunate if you see them in a dream, as they are powerful symbols which can be bought to your aid when you need them, or help you understand deep emotions you may not always want to deal with.

The lion always follows me around the house from the outside, just following me. The Tiger just sits under the pine tree out front and just looks at me.She never leaves that tree. Lion won't let me leave the house. Recurring dream for 9 years now.

Very interesting read..thanks

I have recurring dreams of actually transforming into a giant, armored, flying tiger.  what do you suppose that means? it's never the same dream.   sometimes different scenarios, but always the same giant tiger with teal-blue stripes.

YOu know lions and tigers are really my favourite cats - I like these wild animals very much!

Never dreamed of lions or tigers, but had a violent, vivid and very lucide dream about ...an alligator!

Read my article and let me know what this dream means... it was really quite disturbed at the time...

I had a dream today same exact dream i had a year or 2 ago, but it was a dog like boxer/tiger dark orange and black stripes, and also ive only had this dream with this tiger like dog for a second time with today and last time. The dream was exactly the same as it was the first time i went though my whole dream at first the dog/tiger was following me cause whoever had him sent him after me im not bout too go into detail but in the end of this dream this time it became my friend i was its owner because its owner just left never came back while it was after me.it was very friendly i felt a little scared but happy cause it trusted me and i felt like i could trust it. all the way through the dream i was scared but not completely it felt heavy like if it was an adrenaline rush but something about that situation and the difference at the end of both dreams, and cause this tiger/dog appeared again in my dream just seems like its a sign or something i dont know. But i could feel that this time around in this dream i had more control over myself in the dream to react to my situation unlike the first time were i just follow my dream, like my body just did what it was supposed too do so i could see how that situation unraveled, but this second time i new what i had too do and were too go and i talked too 2 people in my dream but when they came too talk too me cause it was supposed too happen i new what they were gonna say cause of the first time but instead this time i tried asking one a question too cause it felt weird so i asked one is this the same as last year and he just laughed said forget it ether way your f**ked and acknowledge my friend and said that was weird and he just said whatever and walked away and this the end of the dream too let you know this the difference between the first dream and second and when i talked to the first person i was walking the tiger/dog and dude walked up too me and i asked my question whatever and then told my friend its weird he walked away too then some car was about too be turning the corner down the street too my right and i new so i took the tiger/dog of th leash i had him on told him to run and i started running i ran left he was running away just like i told him i look back that car sped up trying too catch me and i see the tiger/dog still right behind instead of leaving.this time in my dream i escaped i can do this thing in my dreams were i can force my self too wake up usually its a struggle too do that soo it takes me time too do it in my dreams but this time, back to the ending of the dream i took another left on a side of a house i see a wooden fence door while i was running towards it i told the tiger/dog to run under the porch and hide and wait for me ill be back instead of running jumping over the fence it was pretty high up, instead i choose too wake my self up maybe about 3 or 4 seconds in my dream too do my thing too wake my self up and i woke up instantly.now let me explain when i force wake myself up its something i do with my hands a particular hand sign and or something like in my mind in the dream i say wake up and when im starting too wake up everything moves slow like really slow if i was in slow motion i was about 10 steps from that fence in 3 to 4 seconds before i almost hit the fence door my hands joined together and did a certain hand sign and everything slowed down and in that instant i said wake up but i felt sure, confident if you wanna say. If you wanna say and i woke up everytime i force wake up it feels like its go,s in slow motion and 3 to 4 seconds passedand its like my eyes slowly blinked once and i woke up but when i wake up its like when you put your head underwater and your head feels like its floating in like dense heavy water and then that instant when you pull your head out the water and you feel like your head is heavy cause your hair is heavy from the water that instant when your in the water and pull your head out thats how it feels pulling myself out my dreams. This is about the fastest time i pulled myself out of a dream though.sorry for all that extra stuff haha but i just really wanna know whats up with that dream if someone can try too explain please and thank you

Ive dreamed of a tiger inside our old rented house (now abandoned) and i was with my elder brother. This tiger is very beautiful and didnot attack. When suddenly, the tiger changed into big fat, long snake. We were not afraid as we open the door the let it out of our room. Kindly help me with the meaning. Thanks.
